The streets of Honokaʻa was once again be filled with music, joy, and community spirit. Mahalo to all who joined us and help make this year’s celebration unforgettable.

The Festival took place in downtown Honokaa, on Mamane Street between Kika Street and Lehua Street. This popular event included food booths, silent auction, taiko drummers, magic, community bon dancing and great live music.

Starting at noon on the lawn of the Honokaa Salvation Army, the festival will feature an opening chant by Reverend Yamagishi, the release of "peace doves," the Jazz Band of Honoka`a High & Intermediate School (led by Grammy award winner Gary Washburn) and Hilo Taishoji Taiko group. Angel Prince Dance Institute will also perform and there will be a community bon dance led by the bon dancers of Honoka`a Hongwanji and other temples. There will be tribute to the labor martyr Katsu Goto (www.KatsuGotoMovie.org), introduction of members of his extended family from Japan and presentation of proclamations by the County of Hawai`i and the State of Hawai`i. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zjV-pBmO0CPrd3l5Y3dUZfNzS-6WPzCdpc8KetXgKq8/edit. Cast members of the musical "Peace On Your Wings" ( https://www.peaceonyourwings.com/ ) will be coming from Oahu to perform a musical tribute to Honoka`a's Home Town Hero.

Following the entertainment at the festival, Honokaa People's Theater will have a free showing of "Across the Universe," which features the music of the Beatles. 3:30 pm. https://www.honokaapeople.com/

Students and teachers from around the globe will be urged to express their own interpretation of this year's Peace Poster Contest theme, "Peace Through Health." Prizes will be awarded for various age divisions. The contest is open to all students and homeschoolers.

Peace Day Parade!

Saturday, Sept. 21, 11 a.m. The signature Peace Day event, when Mamane Street will close for the "moving stage" of marching bands, taiko drummers, hula, bon dancers, cirque performers and multicultural music and entertainment.

This year’s theme: “We’ve Got the Beat!”

Saturday, September 21, 12-2 p.m at the Honokaa County Park (Sports Complex). Admission is free and all are welcome.

“Wine at 5”

A Blue Zones project at Cafe Il Mondo, 5pm, Friday, September 20. Free wine samples. Live Music by the New Dharma Band.

Read for Peace

Thursday, September 12, 5-6 p.m. at Honoka’a Public Library, with Honoka’a author Sara Akerman, “Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers.” Join us for an engaging conversation about the stories of the U.S. Military presence in Honoka’a during World War II.

Experience four sessions of guided sitting and walking meditation, followed by a Dharma discussion with Questions & Answers.

8th Annual Parade & Festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace

Honoka‘a, Big Island of Hawaii hosts the premiere Peace Day event in the State of Hawai‘i, and the only event of its kind worldwide, a Parade and Festival demonstrating unity in support of peace, compassion and awareness of interdependence. New this year, parade steps off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Hundreds of participants from over 30 groups will perform or exhibit in a unique parade, described as a “moving stage” of music, dance and entertainment-with-a-message.  The Festival which follows in Honoka‘a Sports Complex will include entertainment and 40+ vendors and exhibitors.  Admission is free and families are encouraged to come and enjoy lots of live music, food booths, crafts, train rides, a “jump and slide,” taiko drums, magic, and a large community bon dance for all to join.

Peace Concert

JUST ANNOUNCED – John Cruz will appear at The Peace Day Concert, Honokaa People's Theatre, Sunday, September 21, 7 pm.  Proceeds will benefit the Honokaa People's Theatre and the Peace Committee.  John Cruz will also particpate in the Peace Pole Installation ceremony preceeding the concert (6 pm).  Further details to be announced on this website, Facebook and Twitter pages.  See our promotional flier.

Peace Poster Gallery Display Reception

On Friday, September 12, C&J Woods will host a reception and display of winning and other select Peace Poster Contest entries from previous years, 5-7 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served. Various Mamane Street storefronts will also be exhibiting Peace Poster Contest entries from years past.   Music by the New Dharma Band.  FREE.

Day of Mindfulness

This year, the one-day Day of Mindfulness workshop will focus on FOUR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF MINDFULNESS: (1) practicing mindfulness with children; (2) mindfulness practices for the dying and for caregivers; (3) mindfulness practices that can transform your daily life; and (4) harmonizing body and mind through breath awareness, body movements and mindfulness.  A registration fee of $29 per person includes a vegetarian lunch.  Due to space limitations, please pre-register by Friday, September 5.

Parade & Festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace

Honokaa, Hawaii hosts the most significant Peace Day event in the state of Hawaii, and the only event of its kind nationwide, a parade and festival demonstrating unity in support of peace, compassion and awareness of interdependence.  At 12 noon on Sunday, September 20, 2009, more than hundreds of participants from over 30 groups will perform or exhibit in a unique parade, described as a “moving stage.”  The festival which follows will include entertainment and over 40 vendors and exhibitors. 2023 Peace Day Parade Sponsor

The broader Mission of the Peace Committee is to promote the values of peace and compassion and to increase awareness of universal interdependence.  To those ends, the Committee produces and participates in numerous events and programs year-round, partnering with various groups and organizations locally, nationally and internationally.

The Committee's Mission specific to the Peace Day Parade is to publicize and promote the existence of Peace Day in Hawaii (annually, September 21).  In order to accomplish this, the Vision for the Peace Day Parade and Festival is that of an event consisting of world-class entertainment and exhibitions which are both creative and educational. Successful production of the Parade and Festival is also intended to secure support of the Committee's efforts to further pursue its broader Mission to promote peace, compassion and awareness of universal interdependence.

Parade Participation is by invitation only. However, we are on the lookout year-round for groups who will improve the quality of entertainment and exhibitions in the Parade. If you have a referral or suggestion for a high quality, entertaining or educational entrant for the Parade, please contact us at  This email address is being protected from spambots. The Peace Committee, producers of the Parade & Festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace, works within Hawaii State and County guidelines to have a successful Festival for everyone and to avoid any legal and safety issues on the day of the events. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

An exception to the “invitation only policy” is our open invitation to churches to participate via a banner in the parade.
